Whats your thoughts on this article? I agree with what they say, I have seen an increasing amount of people dumping the PSP for a DS.

I read this a while back, and I reckon the PSP is as good as dead. All anyone uses is for is to watch movies and episodes of illegal downloaded content.

I agree, it is only used for illegal content now, I don't know where ours is . But do you think
Another positive announcement is that soon Sony could be offering over 7,000 PS1 games to download to your PSP. With an iTunes type download service for games this is exciting news, just what the PSP needs. Finally plans for a price drop towards the end of the year could also help move units especially for those who are on the fence. It would also fix the money problem gamers face with all the new consoles coming to the market as mentioned above
May boost it?

I'm really disappointed with my PSP. The load times are excruciating and totally kill the gameplay experience for me. I definetly think the DS is going to win this one.

I'm glad I didn't get one, to be honest. I considered it but I really think it's the hugest flop.

I agree and I think the PS3 is set to follow.

Well I had a PSP but returned it. It did seem more set up for movies than anything else. A gaming system should be about games. I they wanted to sell it as a movie player, they should have marketed it as one. The game library was just dismal when I had it. I don't regret returning it at all.

I think it's too late. They're moving into the media market again, and trying to compete with the iPod and other devices. The PSP is a jack-of-all-trades, and it doesn't stand a chance in direct competition with any device. This is why they've given it so much power and possibility. Gaming's gone down the shitter with it, music is the iPod domain, all it has going for it is the ability to watch movies on a fairly large screen for a handheld device.
Personally, if I were Nintendo, i'd use a close ally (Panasonic) and give them backing to release a device to hold video and improve on that aspect of the PSP, as well as sell it for less than what it's retailing for. It would kill the PSP right away and Nintendo have a free market for a few years.

Yeah, I don't have great expectations of the ps3, though plenty of people disagree. I for one won't be bothering.

Not at the price it's at. Ender, do you feel there is going to be a PSP2?

The new format wars is happening a bit too soon, and is already going to be overshadowed by other technologies (check out HVD). There is no real reason to upgrade to High Definition and/or new DVD formats. We've only really just broke into Digital TV, and the DVD format.
The PSP could easily be overtaken at a cheaper price. All that'd be needed is a good battery, a hard drive, and a good OS on the device to play movies. It just depends on who is willing to give it a try.
PSP2 wise. I can see it happening, but it won't be marketed as a games console. Maybe it won't even play games? I can't see many developers wanting to go for a console that flopped the first time.

I agree, I kinda feel the PS3 is taking the same approach (wanting to be marketted as a multimedia hub rather then a games console.

Sony marketed the PS2 to be a multimedia home entertainment system. Around the time they started preaching about the PS3 Sony claimed that if people didn't use the PS2 as a home entertainment system then the console was a failure (in that case, the PS2 was a total flop). Now Sony want to claim that it's both a home entertainment system and a custom PC (even though European courts stuck it in them by legally binding it as not being a PC).
Sony only have two things going for them nowadays. Their brand and their developers. MS are starting to drive the developers away now, so all they're left with is their brand. At the moment Sony is still the most trusted brand in electronics. Most other divisions of Sony are failing fast though. To be honest the only thing 'good' they've done in the past few years is the Playstation brand and Blu-Ray. Walkman is as good as dead now, their TV sales have gone down the shitter from poor quality products, lack of durability and the fact that everyone else just beat them at it. In reality, they shouldn't be acting anywhere near as arrogent as they are for the position they can put themselves in with a major loss in the Playstation brand. It could be the one move they make which would actually damage the company and force them to make changes.

Okay but it seems that all of the major company's are in trouble so who is doing well? When one company does bad, always another one benefits and I just can't see anyone streaking ahead in the market right now?

Microsoft are rich enough to make loses, so I wouldn't say they're doing bad. As far as gaming goes, Nintendo are still operating at a steady pace. If the PS3 does as everyone predicts and flops I think this would be Nintendo's best time to attack the gaming market head-on. Over here, no one has even heard of the Nintendo Wii apart from the more hardcore gamers. This is exactly what Nintendo doesn't want. Nintendo always seems to attract the hardcore fans, but in reality, these fans make up a VERY small part of gaming. I know everyone seems to want a Wii, but even with all these people the PS3 will still dominate because of casual gamers. Nintendo needs to pry these gamers away to really take the market. This is what I feel the Wii exists for. Now if only Nintendo would pull their heads out of their asses and get a real advertising sector to their company.
